Mission:Explore at the GA Conference – 1

Mission:Explore was launched at the Geographical Association’s 2010 Annual Conference in Derby. This is how we do a book launch:

We had a fantatsic 3 days, getting lots of people and organisations engageed with what we are doing. In a nutshell, Mission:Explore’s 102 missions aim to provide accessible, inclusive and engaging explorations to (re)engage young people with geography.

One of the highlights of the weekend was getting the legendary geographer Doreen Massey to take part in one of our Missions. See the photographic proof here!

  1. Thanks for the comment. Mission:Explore has a strong safety element and we have worked in partnership with child safety organisations. You are quite right to question the safety aspect.

What you can't see in the video is that the road was a quiet back street and that three people were on look out to ensure everyones safety.

The important point is that when youngsters play football in a similar street ( as some where around the corner from the filming) as adults / parents / teachers we have the duty and responsibility to help them do it safely.

  2. Thought this was probably the case. I think that the Mission:Explore concept is excellent. As a head of geog dept and a parent of a teenager I am looking at this from both sides.

  3. You comment has made us think about the image we portray so thank you for posting it!

As a head of geography and father myself I'm often torn between what I'd like to be doing and what would best best for young people.

Thank you for starting the conversation 🙂

    All the best
